Yesterday I went to see Rękawka for the first time. It’s a fair organized in Podgórze, Kraków always on the Tuesday following Easter. Still in the pagan times it was a celebration to commemorate the dead, which was held round the Krak’s Mound (the burial site of the legendary founder of Kraków). In the Middle Ages there was an attempt to turn it into a religious holiday and a church dedicated to St. Benedict was built next to the mound. However, the two traditions intertwined. As a result, yesterday I could visit the church (it’s open just two times a year!) and see a reconstruction of a battle reenacted by amazingly-dressed warriors.
